Anatomic criteria can be divided into two classes:

Qualitative criteria

  • Presence of a G layer (or a similar layer) and its aspect.
  • Details on sections made in the G (or similar) layers.

Quantitative criteria

In regular and tension wood (a value for regular wood RW and another for tension wood TW):

  • Vessels radial diameter (VRD), tangential diameter (VTD) and area (VS) of isolated lumens.
  • Vessel frequency (VF), in mm-².
  • Shape index (SI) of isolated vessels, computed by.
    Shape index:
  • Vessels grouping index (VGI): total number of vessels / number of groups.
  • Fibers external radial diameter (FRD) tangential diameter (FTD) and mean diameter (FMD).
  • Fiber lumen external radial diameter (FLRD), tangential diameter (FLTD) and mean diameter (FLMD).
  • Linear ratio of walls in all fibers (RWT), computed by: (FMD - FLMD) / FMD.
  • Linear ratio of walls in radial fibers (RRWT), computed by: (FRD - FLRD) / FRD.
  • Linear ratio of walls in tangential fibers (TRWT), computed by: (FTD - FLTD) / FTD.
  • VFBTi: vessel frequency in each sample (i = 1 or 2) of tension wood in Ruelle (2003).
