Summary

Quantitative data relative to the vegetative development of tree species of a French Guiana primary forest have been statistically analyzed in order to constitute groups of species to be used in a dynamic population model.

The number of variables used for each taxon has been reduced thanks to a correlation matrix between the following data:

  • Mean diameter.
  • A1 to A7: growth rate for each diameter class (measured on all Paracou plots).
  • Dawkins index.
  • Recrutment rate.

The table of taxa described potential dimension and dynamics variables is then treated by a PCA followed by a non-hierarchical classification (method of the "dynamic clouds"). A CFA is then processed on the dameter strucuture table (reflecting the position of each species in the stand).These two analyses allow classifying the abundant taxa in 5 groups. Shade tolerant of the understorey and of the canopy, semi-tolerant, and heliophilic species of the understorey and of the canopy are distinguished.

Taking into account biological parameters relative to younger stages of development (dissemination, seedlings' sensibility to light) allows showing the validity and the ecological limits of this grouping.

The choice was made not not integrate the mean diameter in the analysis, since it reflect the status of a stand at a given time. Also, growth rate in logged parcels have not been retained.

Favrichon (1994) only includes taxa with an effective over 15 individuals while Favrichon (1995) gives results for all species. The last data have been denoted « n<15, group».
